Measurement Considerations for Wheelchair Customization:
Seat Depth: Gauge the distance from the rearmost body point to the inner knee. Deduct a minimum of two inches. Some individuals prefer added leg overhang to facilitate leg lifting.
Back Height: Calculate from the seat base to the uppermost point of the wheelchair back. Selection depends on the required upper back support and the potential effect on upper body rotation freedom.
Rear Seat to Floor: Determine the measurement from the ground to the rear seat edge. This measurement determines the backward inclination ("dump" or "squeeze") of the wheelchair seat, concerning the front seat-to-floor dimension.
Hanger Angle: Establishes the distance toes extend away from the body, assessed horizontally. A tighter angle contributes to a smaller turning radius. The knee's capacity to bend towards the perpendicular also plays a role.
Seat Width: Based on the widest body point from knee to hip, add an inch to allow comfortable movement. Clothing bulk, especially heavy winter coats, should be considered if relevant.
Wheel Camber:Denotes the wheel's angle relative to the vertical. More camber enhances stability and agility but may limit maneuverability in narrow spaces. Standard daily wheelchairs typically have a three-degree camber.
Front Seat to Floor: Measure from the back of the knee to the foot sole. Subtract the cushion's compressed thickness, then add a minimum of two inches for footrest clearance. Exclude footrest clearance if foot propulsion is intended.
Footrest Width: Calculate the distance between the inside of each legrest tubing, determining the desired leg rest spacing.
Center of Gravity: Measure from the front of the seat back post to the center of the rear axle.
Seat to Footrest Length: Calculate from the edge of the seat upholstery to the top rear of the footrest.
Backrest Angle: Determine the angle from the back post to the floor. A ninety-degree angle is perpendicular to the floor. To estimate the angle from back post to seat, subtract two degrees from the measurement for every 0.5" of dump.
