Measurement Guide for Wheelchair Customization:

  • Seat Depth:
    • Determine the measurement from the body's rearmost point to the inside of the knee, subtracting a minimum of two inches. Some individuals prefer extra leg extension to accommodate handlifting the leg.
  • Back Height:
    • Calculate the measurement from the seat base to the highest point of the wheelchair back. This decision hinges on the required upper back support and its impact on upper body rotation freedom.
  • Rear Seat to Floor:
    • Measure from the ground to the back edge of the seat. In relation to the front seat-to-floor dimension, this measurement dictates the backward incline ("dump" or "squeeze") of the wheelchair seat.
  • Hanger Angle:
    • Establishes the extent to which toes extend away from the body, measured horizontally. A tighter angle facilitates sharper turns in confined spaces. The knee's flexibility towards the perpendicular also contributes.
  • Seat Width:
    • Based on the widest body point from knee to hip, add an inch for comfortable movement. Take into account clothing bulk, especially for heavy winter coats.
  • Wheel Camber:
    • Refers to the wheel's angle relative to the vertical. More camber enhances stability and agility but may limit passage through narrow spaces. Standard daily wheelchairs typically use a three-degree camber.
  • Front Seat to Floor:
    • Measure from the back of the knee to the foot sole. Subtract the cushion's compressed thickness, then add at least two inches for footrest clearance. Omit footrest clearance if the wheelchair will be foot-propelled.
  • Footrest Width:
    • Calculate the distance between the inner legrest tubing, determining the desired spacing between legrests.
  • Center of Gravity:
    • Measure from the front of the seat back post to the center of the rear axle.
  • Seat to Footrest Length:
    • Determine the measurement from the edge of the seat upholstery to the top rear of the footrest.
  • Backrest Angle:
    • Measure the angle of the back post in relation to the floor. A ninety-degree angle is perpendicular to the floor. To estimate the angle from back post to seat, subtract two degrees from the measurement for every 0.5" of dump.
